Bolo Rainha is an alternative to the traditional Bolo Rei in Portugal, especially for those who prefer a less sweet version without candied fruit. Made with a similar dough to Bolo Rei, Bolo Rainha is also fluffy and slightly buttery, but is filled exclusively with nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pine nuts, and sometimes dried figs or raisins.

The top of Bolo Rainha is decorated with a generous layer of dried fruit and is often brushed with jam or honey, giving it a delicious sheen. It lacks the traditional bean or toast of Bolo Rei, but it has become a popular Christmas choice in Portugal, especially among those who enjoy the flavor of dried fruit without the sweet touch of candied fruit.
