"The history of mankind is the history of its disagreements with God; neither does he understand us, nor do we understand him." José Saramago Saramago wrote another book. Its title is "Cain," and Cain is one of the main protagonists. God is another, humanity in its various expressions is another still. In this book, as in his previous ones, such as "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ," for example, the author holds nothing back nor seeks subterfuge when addressing what, for millennia, in all cultures and civilizations, has been considered untouchable and unnameable: divinity and the set of norms and precepts that mankind establishes around this figure to demand of themselves—or perhaps it would be better to say to demand of others—an unshakable and absolute faith, in which everything is justified, from denying oneself to exhaustion, or dying as a sacrifice, or killing in the name of God. "Cain" is not a theological treatise, nor an essay, nor a settling of scores: it is a work of fiction in which Saramago puts his narrative ability to the test by telling, in his own distinctive style, a story whose music and fragments of lyrics we all know. Well, with his head held high, which is how we must confront power, without fear or excessive respect, José Saramago has written a book that will not leave us indifferent, that will provoke in its readers discomfiture and perhaps some anguish. However, my friends, great literature is there to plunge itself into us like a dagger in the belly, not to lull us to sleep as if we were in an opium den and the world were pure fantasy.
