Bolo Rei is one of the most traditional Christmas desserts in Portugal. This circular, crown-like cake is made with a light, fluffy dough, similar in texture to brioche, and is filled with candied fruits and nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and pine nuts, and flavored with port wine or brandy. Its surface is decorated with more colorful candied fruits, giving it a vibrant and festive appearance, and is also dusted with powdered sugar.

One of the quirks of Bolo Rei is the tradition of hiding a dried bean and a small gift (usually a porcelain or metal object) inside. Tradition dictates that whoever finds the bean is responsible for buying the Bolo Rei the following year. This cake is popularly enjoyed between Christmas and Epiphany (January 6th), making it a staple on the festive table in many Portuguese families.
