Bolo Rei

Bolo Rei is one of the most traditional Christmas desserts in Portugal. This circular cake, resembling a crown, is made with a soft and light dough, with a texture similar to brioche, and is filled with candied fruits, dried fruits such as walnuts, almonds and pine nuts, and flavored with port wine or brandy. Its surface is decorated with more colorful candied fruits, giving it a vibrant and festive appearance, and is also sprinkled with powdered sugar.

One of the interesting facts about Bolo Rei (King Cake) is the tradition of hiding a dried bean and a small trinket (usually a porcelain or metal object) inside. Tradition says that whoever finds the bean is responsible for buying the Bolo Rei the following year. This cake is popularly enjoyed between Christmas and Epiphany (January 6th), and is a staple at the festive table in many Portuguese families!
