In 1949, production of Dr. Bayard's excellent and popular cough drops began. Today, the factory produces four tons of drops per day, keeping the secret of the recipe: sugar, glucose, and honey dissolved in a tea made from medicinal plants, as delicious as the story behind them. In 1939, Lisbon became a safe haven for refugees from war-torn Europe. This is how Álvaro Matias, a young grocery store clerk in downtown Lisbon, met a Frenchman named Dr. Bayard. During these difficult years, an unlikely friendship blossomed, with Álvaro learning French, serving as a guide, and finding supplies when the French refugee was most distressed. The latter thanked him by giving him his most valuable possession: the formula for chest drops.
