The story of a great passion in wartime. Who knows if Captain Afonso Brandão's life would have been completely different if, on that cold, damp night in 1917, he hadn't fallen in love with a beautiful Frenchwoman with green eyes and sweet words. The Portuguese army officer was in the trenches of Flanders, amid the carnage of World War I, when his love was tested by the harshest of trials. Secretly, the German High Command was preparing a decisive attack, an offensive so devastating it would win the war in a single blow, and intended to break the Allied defense line in a small sector of the Lys Valley. The place where the Portuguese were. Captain Afonso Brandão changed his life almost without knowing it, on a cold, breezy night, when he caught sight of a beautiful Frenchwoman with green eyes and a honeyed voice. The officer commanded a company of the Minho Brigade and had been in the trenches of Flanders for only two months when, during his rest period, he decided to spend the night at a castle near Armentières. There he met a stunning baroness, and an irresistible attraction blossomed between them. But their love would face a severe test. The German High Command, meeting in secret in Mons, decided the time had come to launch the great offensive to defeat the Allies and win the war, and chose the Lys Valley as the stage for the final attack. Waiting for them, unaware of the terrible cataclysm about to descend upon them, was the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps.
